Calhoun Sandcrabs' comeback falls just short

SAN ANTONIO - If someone would have told the Calhoun Sandcrabs they would score the final 20 points of their Class 4A, Division II regional game against Pflugerville Hendrickson, chances are they would have liked their chances of winning the game. But that's not how it worked out. more >>

Advocate-area teams playing football well in playoffs

Refugio defeats East Bernard 28-20 in playoffs

Refugio's Jourdan Ortiz made two big touchdown catches Saturday night. But the biggest catch he made in the Class 2A, Division II playoff game against the East Bernard didn't come from Bobcats quarterback Kyle Hendley. Ortiz, who had nine receptions for 148 yards, picked off a Matt Stelzel pass late in the fourth quarter to preserve Refugio's 28-20 victory over the Brahmas that sent the top-ranked Bobcats (13-0) into next week's quarterfinals against Blanco (13-0). more >>

Raiders to face second straight slot-T offense

Rice Consolidated can spot a lot of similarities between last week's Class 2A, Division I regional playoff game against Navarro and today's quarterfinal contest against George West. The Raiders played Navarro in an afternoon game at Victoria's Memorial Stadium and the Panthers ran out of a slot-T offense. more >>

Refugio after fast start against East Bernard

Refugio coach Jason Herring spent quite a bit of time this week watching the tape of the Bobcats' 21-14 Class 2A, Division II regional playoff win over East Bernard last season. "They're real, real similar to last year," Herring said. "Everybody is there except No. 7. Except for Mike Hayes they're all there. They're real solid. Without question, they're the best football team we've faced. We've come out kind of slow in our first two playoff games. It will be critical for us to get off to a good start against them. We can't wait until the second half." more >>

Shiner faces big task

SHINER - There aren't too many running backs in the state that have rushed for 2,000 yards this season, but the Shiner Comanches will see one today. Beeville living on the edge in playoffs

Close playoff wins are nothing new for Beeville coach Chris Soza, and last Friday's 30-28 Class 4A, Division II area victory over Corpus Christi Calallen continued the trend. Freshman Lonnie Jordan kicked a 25-yard field goal with three seconds left in the fourth quarter to silence the Calallen fans, who watched their team suffer a rare home-field loss. more >>
