Gas leaks should merit higher priority

Editor, the Advocate: At approximately 7:40 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 8, our next door neighbor rang our doorbell and said she smelled gas between her house and the one on the other side of her. My husband went with her to check, and they returned to our house and called CenterPoint Energy at 7:50 p.m. to report a gas leak. more >>

Rate increase hurts those who can't afford it

Editor, the Advocate: Recently, I attended a meeting where the Victoria Transit Agency wanted public comment on their rate increases. Most were moderate and reasonable except one. That one was raising the rates for para-transit from 60 cents to $2 per trip. For those who don't know what para-transit is, it is a pickup service for those with serious medical problems, so much so, that they can't drive themselves. Most of these people live on fixed incomes where they receive a cost-of-living increase. It was only 5.5 percent for those on Social Security. This one is 330 percent. Gas prices are down 50 percent but Victoria Transit wants to charge the most for those who can afford it the least. Let's be reasonable here. more >>

Veterans Day for some is every day

Editor, the Advocate: Veterans Day. Ah, yes such a touching meaningful day, but for me it's as such every day of the year; tear I do shed, and it touches me deeply to know that each was willing to lay down their life for their country and "us," so freedom continues. What a sacrifice. more >>

Front page details of births too much

Editor, the Advocate: My, how times have changed. When ladies of my era gave birth to their children we were, of course, thankful; mother and baby were healthy and shared our job with family and friends. Soon after, we shared the details with our close lady friends. more >>

We can be happy the election is over

Editor, the Advocate: Sure glad the election 2008 is over. And I hope that the people who voted for Obama get the change they have been shouting for. Oh yeah, the continent of Africa several years back - the people were gung-ho for change. Well, if you read the Advocate or listen to radio or TV, you know they got their change. Merry Christmas. more >>

Victoria needs to be a better place to have fun

Our teachers need more pay and more respect

Editor, the Advocate: Teachers in our very respectful schools should be paid more then they are. If you look at it, teachers put up with more than enough troubles of their own and have to worry about the students' troubles. more >>

Regulating oil prices will save oil field jobs

Editor, the Advocate: I have many friends in the oil field business. As the fuel prices fluctuate, I see oil field jobs fluctuate as well. When fuel prices are high, jobs are abundant. When fuel prices are low, businesses feel the effect and have to cut back by either laying off people or shutting down. We need to regulate the price of fuel so it's good for oil field as well as the consumer. more >>
